References
It is a condition of selection that all minders have references, both written and verbal. Be prepared to offer these to the homeowner. References can include previous house sitting jobs or professional and personal character references. If these are difficult to get for whatever reason, you can also supply a police check.
Police Checks
It is advised that you also consider a police check. This gives an additional layer of confidence to the owner that you are the right person for the job. Some professions now complete a police check for you so it might be a good idea to get it from your employer if they already have it. Click here for more information.
Interviews
Like a job interview, the home owner interview is very important.
Here are some tips;
Be flexible – When arranging an interview time. Suggest that you will come to the home for an interview (this saves the owner time and gives you a chance to see the property).
Be honest – State your reasons for wanting to be a house minder, whatever they are – honesty is always appreciated.
Be interested – Take an interest in the home and its surroundings. Owners want to know their most precious asset is in good hands.
Don’t be shy – State clearly what you bring to the arrangement – i.e. you are reliable, love pets, have tended many gardens, will keep the dog exercised and the cat fed. Owners want to be confident that you can care for their home and belongings, so don’t be too modest.
Engage their pets – For owners with pets it is important that at the interview you are attentive and show interest in their pets. Owners are very particular about their pets and are looking for an obvious rapport between you and their companions.
Be prepared – think about the impression you give if you are late for appointments. Also try to think that you are the owner interviewing someone to look after your own home. What would you be looking for?
Handy hint: It is worth noting that owners, who travel frequently, often request the same house minder. For this reason it is sometimes a good idea to opt for short term assignments as well as long term ones. Your investment in the short term might just result in that long term assignment later in the year. Don’t forget too, short term assignments add to your profile.
